PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can cause pneumonia.
Bacteria are a common cause of pneumonia in adults. Viruses that infect your lungs and airways can cause pneumonia. The flu and the common cold are the most common causes of viral pneumonia in adults. Respiratory syncytial virus is the most common cause of viral pneumonia in young children.
Pneumonia symptoms can vary from so mild you barely notice them, to so severe that hospitalization is required. How your body responds to pneumonia depends on the type germ causing the infection, your age and your overall health.
The signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:Cough, which may produce greenish, yellow or even bloody mucus, fever, sweating and shaking chills, shortness of breath, rapid, shallow breathing, sharp or stabbing chest pain that gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough, loss of appetite, low energy, and fatigue, nausea and vomiting, especially in small children.
Vaccines can help prevent pneumonia caused by pneumococcus bacteria or the flu virus. Vaccines cannot prevent all cases of pneumonia. However, compared to people who don't get vaccinated, those who are vaccinated and still get pneumonia tend to have:fewer serious complications, milder infections, pneumonia that doesn’t last as long and pneumococcus vaccines
Washing hands frequently, especially after coughing or blowing your nose, going to the bathroom, diapering, and before eating or preparing foods.
Do not smoke. Tobacco damages your lung's ability to fight off infection, and people who smoke have been found to be at higher risk of getting pneumonia. Tobacco users are considered one of the high-risk groups that are encouraged to get the pneumonia vaccine to help prevent pneumococcal pneumonia.
