HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is blood pressure that is higher than normal.
Having blood pressure measures consistently above normal may result in a diagnosis of high blood pressure (or hypertension). The higher your blood pressure levels, the more risk you have for other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. It's important to have your blood pressure checked at least every two years starting at age 18.
Blood pressure is determined by two things: the amount of blood the heart pumps and how hard it is for the blood to move through the arteries. The more blood the heart pumps and the narrower the arteries, the higher the blood pressure.
There are two types of high blood pressure; the primary hypertension, also know as essential hypertension and the secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension tends to develop gradually over many years. Secondary hypertension tends to appear suddenly and cause higher blood pressure than does primary hypertension.
Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms. However, once blood pressure reaches a certain level, symptoms begin to show: Blurry or double vision, lightheadedness/fainting, fatigue, headache, heart palpitations, nosebleeds, nausea or vomiting and shortness of breath.
Changing your lifestyle can help control and manage high blood pressure. Your health care provider may recommend that you make lifestyle changes including: Eating a heart-healthy diet with less salt, getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight, limiting alcohol, not smoking and getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily.
